Full moom august5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() The Maine Farmers’ Almanac first published Native Americans’ terms for the full moons in the 1930s, according to NASA – including the Algonquin tribes’ “Sturgeon Moon,” named after large fish that were more easily caught in the Great Lakes and other bodies of water during this time, and the “Green Corn Moon.” This was before late amateur astronomer and Sky & Telescope contributor Hugh Pruett incorrectly understood the definition in 1946, and ultimately helped circulate the popular definition of blue moon: the second full moon within a month, the last of which occurred on Halloween 2020, according to Sky & Telescope.Ī beginner's guide to stargazing (Courtesy CNN Underscored) “Introducing the ‘Blue’ Moon meant that the traditional full Moon names, such as the Wolf Moon and Harvest Moon, stayed in (sync) with their season,” said Diana Hannikainen, Sky & Telescope’s observing editor, in a news release. NASA has reported the first recorded use of “blue moon” occurring in 1528, while Sky & Telescope has traced the term’s origin back to the Maine Farmers’ Almanac published in the 1930s. The sky phenomenon has been a cultural muse for music, art and language – such as hit songs “ When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again” and “ Blue Moon,” recorded by multiple artists including Elvis Presley, and the saying “once in a blue moon,” which describes a rare event. ![]() This weekend is your next chance to catch the rare full blue moon before it again becomes “just a memory” until 2024.Ī blue moon is the third full moon in a season containing four full moons, rather than the usual three, according to Sky & Telescope magazine. ![]()

Jupiter hell reviews5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() The inspiration for the world, the shooting, and the inventory is clearly the dominant FPS of the 90s. The core of Jupiter Hell is the gameplay and how well it mixes very disparate elements. How much fun a player has with his lines depends on how much Doom he has internalized (there are options to turn down the amount of talking and eliminate profanity). He is very much the cursing and jovial ‘90s space marine archetype. There’s not too much in the way of narrative to uncover as the game progresses but the main character is pretty verbose. Both human and monstrous enemies are present and angry. The player becomes a lone specialist (marine, scout, or tech) who needs to investigate Callisto after being shot down over the Jovian moon. The game blends rogue, shooter, and turn-based concepts to create a tense take on some very classic ideas. It is available on the PC, and I played it via Steam. Jupiter Hell is made by ChaosForge and published by Hyperstrange. So, I first get bullets into my own weapon and then take down the enemy. Actually, I don’t because I forgot to reload. The enemy has moved and is now out of cover. After a few bursts, I make the marine take two steps backward and then forward. The human, armed with an assault rifle, has his own cover. The monster drops quickly as it closes the distance. Years ago I picked up a science fiction dystopian novel called Red Rising on a whim. Two enemies pop out of the darkness, so my marine takes a step left, hugs a door frame, gains a cover bonus, and starts firing. I needed a new book to read, and I’m a big fan of the genre. It ended up having a sort of a Hunger Games-on-Mars type of feel and I loved it. Written by Pierce Brown, this trilogy was much deeper than I expected as it took a look at a class-based society and what happens when someone doesn’t fit neatly into their role.įast forward to today, and we now have a Red Rising card game to sink our teeth into. Apparently, game designer Jamey Stegmaier has been trying to make this game for years, never actually being able to make it click. But finally, with the help of co-desiger Alexander Schmidt, he was able to bring something together. Were they successful? Let’s find out as we check out Red Rising, a hand-building, point salad board game for 1-6 players. The goal in Red Rising is to score the most points over the game’s variable number of rounds. Each player starts with a hand of five cards out of a massive deck of 112. All cards in the game feature a character (some may be new/made up) from the Red Rising universe. On a player’s turn, they must either Lead or Scout. To Lead (the main action), you take any character from your hand and place it to one of the four locations on the board. Most characters have a Deploy ability that triggers when used to Lead. These will usually let you manipulate the cards on the board in some way. After resolving that ability, you then can claim any face-up card in one of the other locations. Not only do you get to add that character to your hand, but you also get the ability of the location you pulled from. ![]() Cards can be used either for their deploy ability or saved for their end game scoring. The locations are Jupiter, Mars, Luna, and The Institute. Most of these locations let you earn bonus points in some way, such as moving up on the fleet scoring track or placing an influence cube at The Institute. Luna is the outlier here which lets you claim the sovereign token. This is worth 10 points if you have it at game end and triggers your House power when you claim it. These are minor benefits that will do things like duplicate a location ability. ![]() If you don’t want to Lead, you can Scout instead. For this, you simply draw a card from the character deck and place it in any of the four locations, earning that location’s bonus. The end game triggers when someone has reached space 7 of the Fleet Track, someone has 7 cubes at the institute, and someone has collected 7 helium tokens. If one player achieves 2 of those or all 3 have been achieved by any combination of players, the game ends at the end of the round. Game end scoring will earn points from your characters in hand (they all have end game scoring powers), position on the fleet track, value of your helium, and amount of influence at the institute. On your turn you will either Deploy a card or Scout a new one. When I heard from Stonemaier that there was a Red Rising game up for review, I eagerly snatched it up. I thoroughly enjoyed the book series and wanted to see what he could do with this world. ![]()

The magic circle theory5/21/2023 ![]() Salen and Zimmerman argue that "the term magic circle is appropriate because there is in fact something genuinely magical that happens when a game begins". To play a game means entering into a magic circle, or perhaps creating one as a game begins. In a very basic sense, the magic circle of a game is where the game takes place. as short-hand for the idea of a special place in time and space created by a game". Salen and Zimmerman note that even though "the magic circle is merely one of the examples in Huizinga's list of 'play-grounds', the term is used. The concept of the Magic Circle was applied to digital games by Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman in Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals. But that is what scholarship often is – sampling and remixing ideas in order to come to a new synthesis. To be perfectly honest, Katie and I more or less invented the concept, inheriting its use from my work with Frank, cobbling together ideas from Huizinga and Caillois, clarifying key elements that were important for our book, and reframing it in terms of semiotics and design – two disciplines that certainly lie outside the realm of Huizinga's own scholarly work. The magic circle is not something that comes wholly from Huizinga. In fact, Huizinga's thesis is much more ambivalent on these issues and he actually closes his seminal book with a passionate argument against a strict separation between life and games. The "magic circle" is not a particularly prominent phrase in Homo Ludens, and although Huizinga certainly advocates the idea that games can be understood as separate from everyday life, he never takes the full-blown magic circle point of view that games are ultimately separate from everything else in life or that rules are the sole fundamental unit of games. Eric Zimmerman admits this in his 2012 essay " Jerked Around by the Magic Circle – Clearing the Air Ten Years Later" writing: The term Magic Circle was coined by Eric Zimmerman and Frank Lantz in 1999 and popularized by Eric Zimmerman and Katie Salen in 2003. Huizinga's "magic circle" is not a new synonym for "game," but he conceived of a magic circle, like many other cultural activities, as having game-like characteristics. All are temporary worlds within the ordinary world, dedicated to the performance of an act apart. forbidden spots, isolated, hedged round, hallowed, within which special rules obtain. The arena, the card-table, the magic circle, the temple, the stage, the screen, the tennis court, the court of justice, etc, are all in form and function play-grounds, i.e. Just as there is no formal difference between play and ritual, so the 'consecrated spot' cannot be formally distinguished from the play-ground. In Homo Ludens: A Study of the Play-Element in Culture, Huizinga wrote: Īll play moves and has its being within a play-ground marked off beforehand either materially or ideally, deliberately or as a matter of course. ![]() The term magic circle has been attributed to Dutch historian Johan Huizinga (1872–1945). As stated by Castronova, the "allegedly 'virtual' is blending so smoothly into the allegedly 'real' as to make the distinction increasingly difficult to see". Thus, it becomes difficult to determine the meaning of the word "virtual". These newly established values, subsequently, gain significance on both sides of the membrane. As this suggests, elements of synthetic worlds are being evaluated in terms of their importance in the outside world. Castronova uses the term "synthetic world" because a synthetic world "cannot be sealed completely people are crossing it all the time in both directions, carrying their behavioral assumptions and attitudes with them". More directly, there appears to be a relationship between virtual worlds and the outside world.Įven though virtual worlds display a range of attributes that are unique to their realm, they also exhibit characteristics deriving from the outside world. Instead of being impenetrable, however, an examination of contemporary virtual worlds reveals that the magic circle is actually quite porous. As noted by Edward Castronova in Synthetic Worlds: The Business and Culture of Online Games, the boundary delineating this space "can be considered a shield of sorts, protecting the fantasy world from the outside world". ![]() In games and digital media, the " magic circle" is the space in which the normal rules and reality of the world are suspended and replaced by the artificial reality of a game world. ![]()

![]() ![]() One of the problems with the original game was that the enemies were fairly static. The most satisfying moments come when the story takes you off into new territory and presents you with situations and environments that you didn't get to see the first time around. There are a few moments of déjà vu here and there, and it's nice to see some of the connections to previous missions. The new game covers much of the same territory as the original, but you'll be seeing it all from Hartsock's perspective. ![]() This time around, you'll be taking charge of Joe "Red" Hartsock, the "other" sergeant from the original game. What this game accomplishes in terms of its historical authenticity and innovative tactical combat system is genuinely unlike any other video game you've ever played.īut let's talk about what's new. Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Full Spectrum Warrior and others each contain small components of Brothers in Arms, but none put them together in quite the same way. Still, the best argument against passing over Earned in Blood is that, discounting the original game, there really aren't any other games like it. The "been there, done that" quotient is pretty high in this game. Since the dust has barely settled form the first game's launch, some gamers may be inclined to pass on the new game. There are some new game modes, a new campaign and some impressive AI and texture improvements of course, but the content and gameplay still feel more like an update of the original Brothers in Arms than a full sequel. While Earned in Blood is a stand-alone game with a fifty dollar price tag, the changes it makes to the core game are more in line with what we'd expect from an expansion pack. Now I use the term "sequel" kind of loosely here. Now, barely over a year later, the team is back with a sequel, Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. A thrilling story and intense attention to detail made the game all the more engaging. Instead of relying on the cinematic action hero approach, players of Brothers in Arms had to effectively lead their squadmates around the battlefield, using suppression fire and flanking moves to outmaneuver an enemy every bit as deadly as the player was. Attacking a nearby tank with grenades was utterly pointless. Trying to rush an enemy machine gun nest meant certain death. ![]() Brothers in Arms punished those who relied on run-and-gun tactics. ![]() Earlier this year, Gearbox challenged that model with the release of a sophisticated tactical shooter, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30.
